Like most locals of the island, a local woman is familiar to learning about geopolitical risks emanating from Beijing. Amid rising frictions in the Asia-Pacific, many Guamanians are more focused on economic pressures as opposed to defense issues.

She notes that her main concern is paying bills, and she expresses faith in the American authorities to guarantee her security.

But that feeling of safety wavered recently when headlines broke of a major display in China, where advanced weaponry was showcased—including a long-range system nicknamed the Guam-targeting missile by state press.

Additionally, the image of the Chinese leader together with the heads of state of Russia, DPRK, Iran and additional nations indicated a concerning international bloc that some view as a growing risk.

“According to news coverage, almost everyone in the Pacific should be alarmed,” says a local resident, 71, who resides near the headquarters of the territorial military force.

“However there’s not much residents can change.”

Located roughly 1,800 miles off the coast of China, the territory serves as a vital operational center for the US in the Asia-Pacific region and contains a major defense installation. Experts suggest that if China attempt to seize Taiwan, Guam would likely become a primary target in any potential war.

Because of this, exhibitions of China’s growing armed strength—including strategic missiles, anti-drone technology and four-legged units—are taken seriously across the island.

“Guam is a key operational site for the America in the Western Pacific,” says a spokesperson for the defense operation.

The representative notes that the area is among the most ‘important’ for national defense and that armed services are “equipped to protect American soil here on Guam.”

Therefore, the American government is constructing an advanced protection system intended to offer all-around coverage for Guam. According to a official record, the multi-billion dollar project is planned to be finished within 10 years.

“Residents must be knowledgeable of the danger, while not overly anxious,” notes a retired US marine officer, adding that Beijing’s military have outpaced the United States in some fields.

“In the event that Chinese forces choose their timings and locations carefully… they could significantly damage American military assets,” the commentator adds.

Nevertheless, the same analyst believes that the American forces continues to be powerful and able to counter China’s latest weaponry.

In addition to the missiles, the image of the president positioned with the heads of Pyongyang and Russia at the parade raised new concern among some in the island.

A communications specialist states that she once felt unconcerned about Chinese intentions—until the “group photo” of Russia’s president, Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping. That, she says, suggests “tightened diplomatic relations and mutual support” among the nations.

“This can reshape regional and global diplomacy and make joint operations easier. It’s concerning because it may signal a strategic partnership,” Reilly states.

Local officials, however, repeatedly insist that securing Guam is of critical significance to the US military.

Elected official Jesse Lujan, who chairs the policy group, says that the island leadership gets intelligence briefings from US military officials and that the security of the territory is addressed “as a top priority.”

“Residents’ responsibility is to be composed, educated and together, believing that the appropriate systems are established to guarantee our security.”
